Foreign Trek 1987 Pyrenees

Leaders: Allan Witton, Derek Stubbs, Adrian Dobson, Simon Duffy, Roger Hand  Coach Driver: Dennis Hughes. The illustrated log below contains a full party list.

The Route was a west to east traverse of the Pyrenees from Pic du Midi d’Ossau to Gavarnie followed by a circuit through the Brèche de Roland into Spain. It was almost entirely within the National Parks of the Pyrenees and Ordesa, and as far as Gavarnie we kept as close as possible to the Pyrenees High Route (HRP), with diversions for summit ascents and supplies. The route divided into four main sections between supply points. 1. A fairly gentle walk round the Pic du Midi d’Ossau from Lac de Bious-Artigues to Soques.  2. A high traverse entering Spain at the Col du Palas, returning to France by the Col de la Fache and down the Marcadau valley to Pont d’Espagne. 3. The classic crossing of the Hourquette d’Ossoue below Vignemale from Pont d’Espagne to Gavarnie.  4. A four-day circuit through the Cirque de Gavarnie, the Brèche de Roland and the Ordesa Canyon. The summits climbed were: Pic d’Ayous (2288 m); Grande Fache (3005 m); Petit Vignemale (3032 m); and le Taillon (3144 m).
