The Route was through both the French and Italian parts of the Maritime Alps, almost entirely within the Parc National du Mercantour in France and the Parco Naturale Alpi Maritime in Italy. The route divided into two five-day walking sections and three sections between supply points. The first section was a long loop from St-Martin, north to cross the frontier into Italy at Pas de Préfouns, collecting supplies at Terme di Valdieri and returning via Rifugio Morelli-Buzzi , Rifugio Soria Ellena and back into France over Col de Fenestre. The second section was entirely in France, heading generally south-east from Madone de Fenestre via Refuge de Nice and Refuge des Merveilles to Fontan. The route included summit excursions to Balcon du Gélas (3085 m) and Mont Bégo (2872 m).
